D. Yvette Diamond, Why it Matters

For most of us, life has been shaped by immigration. From the beginning, the United States has been a nation built by people fleeing hardship in search of a better life. It’s this pursuit of opportunity that has fueled our innovation, development, and ingenuity—laying the foundation for America’s rise as a global leader.

Today, as we grapple with a declining population, labor shortages, and mounting demands on our military and economy, we cannot afford to overlook immigration as a powerful solution. Yes, the system needs reform—but not through dismantling, dehumanizing, or division. What’s needed is a bold yet simple approach: one that is welcoming, intentional, and rooted in the very values that built this country.

Yvette’s own life is powered by her family’s immigration journey—from Dutch Indonesians in the former Dutch East Indies, to resettlement in Holland after WWII, and finally to the United States through the Truman Treaty. The richness of these stories, passed down through generations, reflects what we stand to lose if we forget where we came from—and what we’ve always fought for as a nation.
